Stylized interpretation of the Anastasis, or the Descent of Christ into Hell. Within Christian iconography the Anastasis icon is the icon of the Resurrection and thus of Easter, for Christ breaks into the realm of death and rescues Adam and Eve from their bondage to sin and decay. This piece imagines Christ as the Lamb of God descending to the realm of the dead where humanity reaches out for salvation. There is a bit of a narrative flow in that dragons and serpents hold humanity in bondage, but the Lamb rescues them, giving the death blow to sin and pulling humanity to heaven, underscoring the idea of theosis. Ideal for a fresh approach to Easter in which some very profound theological ideas can be explored through the imagery.
